The Big Stroll

Page history last edited by John Flynn 2 years, 11 months ago

What is the BIG STROLL?

It's a day-long walk from here to there.

It's open to anyone and everyone.

It's casual and it's fun.

It has an organizer, but no one's in charge.

It's strolling, eating, and shopping.

Big Stroll 2021: What's Up With Wilshire?

June 19, 2021 -- 8AM -- From One Wilshire to the Sea

You need to be fully vaccinated to join us for the stroll!

Please do bring a mask in case any place you want to go into requires it.

So...what's changed on Wilshire? A LOT. Museums have gone up and come down, Metro stations are popping up here and there, and change is everywhere. Join us for the classic Stroll route to see what's new. If you want to take the Expo Line, please meet us at the Culver station at 7:15. Fare is $1.75 one way to the Metro and 7th Station. We'll walk to the corner of Wilshire and Grand (between 7th and 6th) and set out at 8AM.

The great news about Wilshire is that not only is there the Red and Purple Line trains that take us as far as Western, but the 720 Metro Bus travels the length of Wilshire. Returning to Culver City is a snap because of Metro Expo or Big Blue Bus back to Culver City. www.metro.net will help you figure it out!

We'll do an easy pace over the 15.5 or so miles: we usually stop for coffee, lunch in Beverly Hills, and again for a cold drink in the afternoon. We should hit the ocean around 3:30 or 4:00.

The LA Conservancy has published a great guide to Wilshire right here...

Big Stroll Fall 2019: Station to Station

Dec 1 2019 -- 9AM -- Starting at Downtown's Union Station...

We're strolling L.A. again ... from Union Station to Culver City Expo via Sunset, Melrose and Robertson. Meet us in the big, open waiting room in Union Station...you can take Metro to get there, or a bus! www.metro.net will help you get there.

We will stroll out through Olvera Street and up to the beginning of Sunset Boulevard. In Silverlake we'll turn south to catch the beginning of Melrose, and then on to Robertson Boulevard. Lunch (and shopping) somewhere in the heart of Melrose...maybe Mozza, maybe someplace else.

We should arrive at Culver City Expo around 3:30 or so. This is a slightly shorter stroll than usual, 14 miles, but loads to see.

Big Stroll 2019: Wilshire!

May 25, 2019 -- 8AM -- From One Wilshire to the Sea

Big Stroll Info Sheet 2019 Wilshire.pdf

We're walking a big L.A. street from one end to the other this fall! In the past we've done Pico, Santa Monica, San Vicente...and now we are returning to the classic Big Stroll, first completed by my father-in-law Norm Palley and some buddies of his from Rand. This year we're returning to the "original" in honor of the opening of the new Expo line: we will be walking Wilshire. If you want to take the Expo Line, please meet us at the Culver station at 7:15. Fare is $1.75 one way to the Metro and 7th Station. We'll walk to the corner of Wilshire and Grand (between 7th and 6th) and set out at 8AM.

PICO! AKA the Jonathan Gold Memorial Big Stroll

November 24, 2018 (Saturday of Thanksgiving Weekend)

Join The Big Stroll for an adventure across the face of L.A. ... from the corner of Pico and Main in Downtown Los Angeles, to the end of Pico near Shutters in Santa Monica.

START: We will meet at the SW corner of Pico and Main...the official address is 107 West Pico...there's a Metro PCS store there. This is the section of the Fashion District that specializes in sporting goods, esp. team jerseys, caps, and so on. Alas, there are no convenient coffee shops, etc. ... but Pico is FULL of great food! We will start the stroll as close to 8AM as possible.

If you want to travel with us to the start, we'll be starting off near Main and Venice in Culver City...you can park in our neighborhood if you like...or get the bus with us somewhere along Venice. We'll start by hopping on the MTA #33 (local) or the #333 (express) along Venice Blvd., and meeting up at Pico and Main at 8AM.

Need some help getting to the start from where you are? Use the handy MTA Trip Planner, right here:

http://www.metro.net/

Our itinterary: west on Pico until we hit the sand! Total distance is around 14.5 miles. Here's the map...

http://www.mapmyrun.com/walk/united-states/ca/los-angeles/183126696579886919

We'll be walking at a moderate pace, stopping to eat and explore whenever we feel like it! We should be in Santa Monica by about 3 PM, and will then take the 33 or 333 back home (or to our cars).

Big Stroll 2018: From Silverlake to the Sea!

May 19, 2018 -- 8AM ... The Santa Monica Blvd Stroll!

Hey Strollers! It's that time again!

This year, we're doing Santa Monica Boulevard...from Silverlake to the Sea! It's a slightly shorter walk than the Wilshire stroll: only about 15.8 miles. We'll be gathering at Intelligentsia Coffee Shop at 3922 West Sunset, right near the beginning of Santa Monica Boulevard, at 8AM on Saturday, May 19th.

Big Stroll 2017: Reverse Wilshire

Info Sheet

May 27, 2017, we’re going to flip our original route and walk Wilshire from the sea to Downtown L.A.

We’ll probably take about 8 hours (including lunch) to make it downtown...and then it’s dinner and/or cocktails at Clifton’s!

We walk at an easy pace...20 or 22 minutes per mile. This is an event that’s fun and easy for people of all levels of fitness, and since we’re on Wilshire all the way it’s easy to catch a bus to a transit hub if you have to leave early.

THE START: Wilshire and Ocean, the statue of Santa Monica. Meet us there by 8AM! How to get there? Take the Expo line to Santa Monica. The last stop is about 10 minutes by foot from Wilshire and Ocean.

If you choose to drive, your best bet for parking is the Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure, which is $5 for all day parking. There are also several streets NORTH of Wilshire (like Georgina) which have free street parking. Those are a 15 minute walk from Wilshire and Ocean.

Other lots in Santa Monica can cost A LOT more…$15 or $18 for the day.

Really, you might want to park at or near an Expo station (like La Cienega) which has a modest fee. Either way you’ll be taking the train west at the end of the day!

COFFEE AND LUNCH

We’ll make a couple of stops during the day, including a sit-down lunch somewhere in the Beverly Hills area.

FINISH!

We’ll end at the One Wilshire Blvd. building, and then head over to Clifton’s Cafeteria for a bite and a drink. You can head over to the 7th and Metro station to catch the Expo heading west, or you can stay and explore downtown (Last Bookstore, anyone?).

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Don’t wear NEW SHOES OR CLOTHES to the Stroll. You’ll chafe!

DO bring water!

Big Stroll Spring 2016: Station to Station II -- The Expo Line to the Sea

INFO SHEET!

May 28, 2016, we’re going to do a slightly shorter Big Stroll (around 6.5 miles) from the Culver City Expo Station to the new Santa Monica Expo Station. There’s a lovely bike/pedestrian path next to the track for most of the way: we will follow that, and then take the train home.

A few differences about this one:

  • We will start pretty late for a Big Stroll: meet at Culver Expo Station by 10 AM! The reason for this? Well…

  • We are timing the stroll so that we will hit Sawtelle Japantown around noon. We’ll lunch there and hang out in the neighborhood just north of Olympic on Sawtelle for about 90 minutes

  • We will also take a short detour at Bergamot Station. Maybe 30-45 minutes?

  • There are two sections of the Stroll that don’t include a well-marked bike/pedestrian path: between Motor and Westwood Blvd., and again when we get near 16th and Colorado. We’ve plotted some paths around those, though.

If all goes well, we should hit that Santa Monica station around 4PM, and there’s plenty to do at that end of things. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it already: Tongva Park, right next to the station.

MEET at the Culver Expo Station near the ticket machines no later than 10AM!We’ll cross the street and head north and west along the path next to the CVS Pharmancy…

The path ends for a short while just after Motor Ave. (thanks to a group of “NIMBY” homeowners who have tried to block the path), so at Motor we will turn north under the train and the 10 Freeway and walk uphill to Northvale. We will follow Northvale all the way over to Overland where we will pick up the bike/ped path where it starts again between Overland and Westwood.

When we cross under the 405, we’ll hit Sawtelle -- and lunch and shopping! So much to do in Sawtelle Japantown...sushi, curry, ramen, Giant Robot, Beard Papa, you name it! We’ll set a time and place to meet once we head up Sawtelle: lunch and shopping on your own.

A little more than a mile west of Sawtelle we’ll hit 26th in Santa Monica, and again we’ll take a little detour to wander around Bergamot Station for a while.

The last lap will put us directly onto Colorado for the last mile of Expo. The bike path peters out here (officially it switches to Broadway), but we’ll stick to the sidewalk along Colorado until we hit the station at 5th/4th and Colorado.  To get back to Culver you’ll need a Metro Card...the ride’s about 20 minutes.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Lots of bikers on this path: STAY TO THE RIGHT or USE THE PEDESTRIAN LANE!

Don’t wear NEW SHOES OR CLOTHES to the Stroll. You’ll chafe!

Lost, late or left behind? Just hop on the train and leapfrog us!

Big Stroll 2014: Olympic!

June 14, 2014

8:30 AM to 4 (or so) PM

START: Corner of Olympic and Los Angeles (which divides East and West Olympic Boulevards)

FINISH: the new… Tongva Park! http://www.yelp.com/biz/tongva-park-santa-monica

TOTAL DISTANCE: approximately 15.5 miles!

~

You can take the Expo line to the Pico Station (near Staples Center) or the Red Line to 7th & Metro and walk up (or down) to Olympic (which is between 9th and 11th) and head East to the Start.

OR…you can meet us at the corner of Olympic and Figueroa (in front of Flemings) at about 8:45 AM.

We will stop for coffee or tea somewhere in Koreatown (between Vermont and Western) at 9:30 or 10.

Lunch? June 14th is the LAST DAY Kate Mantilini (the traditional Wilshire halfway point) will be open, and we may chance it…but we may also stop at Natalee Thai at Olympic and Robertson.

We will also stop somewhere in west LA (maybe around Sawtelle) for an afternoon snack.

Finally, we’ll enjoy Tongva Park…the new park near the Pier in Santa Monica.

Want to get back to Culver City? The Metro Rapid 733 will get you back to Venice and Overland, Venice and Bagley, or Venice and Fairfax. There are more direct routes…check the trip planner on Metro.net for those. That same bus will also take you all the way back downtown to Patsouras Plaza (the back side of Union Station), or you could take the 720.

Many years ago, my father-in-law worked at Rand in Santa Monica. He and his colleagues made it a practice to walk the length of Wilshire Blvd., about 16 miles, on a Saturday each spring.

Great idea, right? That Rand crew wasn't the only one to have it...in 2006 some folks calling themselves The Great Los Angeles Walk did the same...and then in 2007 they traversed Pico. If I remember correctly, they were intrigued by food critic Jonathan Gold's project to eat his way along Olympic (which eventually lead to his winning a Pulitzer Prize...hmmm). Read all about it on their blog...no news on whether or not they did Olympic this year.

Personally, I think the all-time classic was this one...but we don't have the time or the gear to do it this way...

PAST EVENTS!

October 10, 2010: 10:10:10 at 10:30 AM!

The Big Stoll does CicLAvia!

10-10-10 marks the day a giant urban park will unfurl across Los Angeles: CicLAvia will provide a car-free, bike and pedestrian-friendly, 7.5 mile thoroughfare. Having strolled Pico and Wilshire and San Vicente...we're going to take on CicLAvia: from East L.A. to the Vermont corridor.

We'll meet near the northern end at the NE corner of Vermont and Wilshire (you can park in the all day lot at 6th and Wilshire, or anywhere in the neighborhood). Meet at 10:30 AM at the Coffee Bean there…right above the Red Line station @ Vermont and Wilshire.

We'll jump on the Metro and ride it as close to the Southeastern end of the CicLAvia route, and then walk the whole route from Hollenbeck Park to LACCC near Heliotrope and Melrose. Total distance will be around 9 miles, but you can always bail around 6-7 since that's when we'll pass Wilshire & Vermont.

Details about CicLAvia:

http://ciclavia.wordpress.com/

www.ciclavia.org

You (or maybe your kids) can bring bikes and or scooters since you can take them on Metro trains. An all day Metro pass is now $6, or you can pay $1.50 for a one-way ticket…up to two children ride free with an adult.

Drop me a line if you’re in!

Last Year's Crew: The Two San Vicentes...

Big Stroll 2009 took across the city along San Vicente! We started near Crenshaw and Venice (where San Vicente was formed by the Red Car heading north to Beverly Hills), and followed it to where it ends at Sunset Boulevard. From there we cut through Beverly Hills and Westwood to pick up the SECOND San Vicente which runs from the VA to the Pacific Ocean. Great crowd this year!
